The plains zebra, a ubiquitous and widely distributed member of the zebra family, holds the title of the most prevalent species. Its habitat, though scattered, encompasses a significant portion of southern and eastern Africa below the Sahara. Scholars have identified six or seven distinct subspecies, among them the quagga, now extinct and once believed to be a distinct species.
