The mighty hippopotamus, colloquially known as the hippo, and specifically identified as the common hippopotamus, Nile hippopotamus, or river hippopotamus, stands as a formidable semiaquatic creature indigenous to the vast landscapes of sub-Saharan Africa. Within the family Hippopotamidae, it shares its existence with just one other surviving species, the diminutive pygmy hippopotamus.
