In rain forests, some trees produce flowers and fruits directly out of the tree trunk, rather than the tips of the branches. This is called cauliflory, like cauliflower, where caul means stem and flory is to do with flowers. Often these flowers are pollinated and the fruit dispersed by fruit bats and possums or similar. This flower is from South America and is a hybrid called Brownea grandiceps x macrophylla.
