A shot of the NNW face of the moon. The bottom half is the Mare Imbrium or Sea of Showers. The second largest mare on the moon, it is a massive crater created by a collision with a proto-planet about 3.8 billion years ago that then filled in with lava, giving it its smooth surface. The variations in color are due to the differing concentration of metals distributed throughout the lunar soil. The bay on the bottom left is the Sinus Iridum, or Bay of Rainbows. I was able to get the timing such that the Jura Mountains surrounding the bay are catching sunlight, and this is known as the Golden Handle. This occurs four to five nights prior to the full moon. The major crater to the north is Plato and is 101 km (60 miles) in diameter and 1.5 km (.9 miles) deep. The crater in the lower right corner is Archimedes, which has a diameter of 81 km (50 miles) and depth of 2.1 km (1.3 miles). The crater just in the sun in the upper left is Philolaus – 70 km (42 miles) in diameter and 3.4 km (2 miles) deep. Much more detailed if downloaded!
