The yucca plant is a large, sturdy staple in many gardens in part because they thrive on neglect and they are highly adaptable. Most varieties - like the one pictured here - have thick, waxy skins that prevent dehydration through evaporation. They store water in their thick roots and some bear edible fruit. Dead leaves collect against the bottom of the trunk to help protect it from the sun. Amazingly, they spread vigorously after wildfires. If you look carefully you can see the imprint of a newly emerging leaf.
