The hippopotamus, often shortened to hippo, is a sizable semiaquatic mammal indigenous to sub-Saharan Africa. It's distinguished as the common hippopotamus, Nile hippopotamus, or river hippopotamus. Within the family Hippopotamidae, it shares existence with only one other species, the pygmy hippopotamus.
